We can already report that at least 19 ridings will have polling places that will remain open after 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, which is the closing time for all other polling stations in the province. Anyone in line to vote will be allowed to do so as long as they line up before 9 p.m. Polls in the riding of Flamborough-Glanbrook in the Hamilton area will close at 10:45 p.m.

Parties are already reporting that voter turnout in this election is historically low. CBC reports that party insiders expect turnout to be below 50%. The lowest voter turnout in provincial history was in 2011, with a turnout of 48.2%.

8:55 p.m.

This election is the first to see two new right-wing parties participate, the Ontario Party and the New Blue Party. The Ontario Party was formed in 2018 and the New Blue in 2020.

The Ontario Party is led by former Conservative MP Derek Sloan and the New Blues are led by Jim Karahalios, who has already been sued by the ruling Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Ontario.

9:00 p.m.

Most polling stations in Ontario are now closed. Anyone still online during a poll will still be able to vote if they stay online.

There are 124 seats in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario; 67 are currently held by the ruling Progressive Conservative Party, 39 by the New Democrats, seven by the Liberals, six are independents, one seat is for the Greens, one for New Blue, one for the Ontario Party and three are vacant.

CBC is now reporting that up to 27 precincts will have polling stations that will remain open after 9 p.m.

9:10 p.m.

The results so far show the Conservatives winning or leading in three ridings, the NDP leading or winning three ridings and the Greens leading or winning one seat.

Most polling places are now closed in Ontario. We will soon know what choice Ontarians have made in our amazing and vibrant democracy.

In the name of myself and the @OntLiberal Gone, thank you to everyone who made our campaign possible. We couldn’t have done it without you. 1/2 #onpoli

Global News and CBC predict that Doug Ford and the PC party will win another majority government.

9:25 p.m.

Lawyer Naomi Sayers was running as an independent in the riding of Sault Ste. Married. the mob covered up the harassment Sayers had suffered during his campaign.

It was a fun time and I met a lot of great people.

I also helped other women and succeeded in getting women on their constituency ballots.

For me, that’s all that matters.

Ensure that people are supported by people in the community.

Yay! #VotesOntario

Incumbent Conservative candidate Ross Romano leads in this constituency with 47.4% of the vote. Sayers is in fourth place behind the Liberals and the NDP with 4.1% of the vote.

Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca hoped to win back his riding of Vaughn-Woodbridge. Del Duca had represented Vaughn as transport minister in the Liberal government of Kathleen Wynne, but lost his seat in the 2018 election to PC candidate Michael Tibollo, associate minister for mental health and addictions.

Del Duca faces Tibollo again, and at the time of the constituency, Tibollo leads Del Duca with 57.5% of the vote to Del Duca’s 31.4% of the vote.

9:30 p.m.

Ontario PC Leader Doug Ford and Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath are both expected to win in their ridings of Etobicoke North and Hamilton Center respectively. Additionally, Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner is expected to win again in his riding of Guelph.

An independent candidate is currently leading a tight race in the riding of Haldimand-Norfolk. Independent Bobbi Ann Brady leads incumbent PC candidate Ken Hewitt by 800 votes.

Brady is a former PC riding chair for Haldimand-Norfolk. According to Hamilton Spectator aims to cut red tape, expand long-term care and boost ODSP.

9:45 p.m.

The PC is confirmed to have won 63 seats, enough to form a majority government. The Ontario NDP is confirmed to have won 15 seats, the Liberals 5 and the Greens one.

Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca lost his race to win a seat in the Legislative Assembly. The Ontario Liberals are also expected to miss the 13 seats needed to gain official party status.

The Ontario Liberals are also expected to lose the riding of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. The PCs had won the riding in 2018, until MP Amanda Simard overtook the Liberals after Doug Ford’s decision to cancel a planned French-language university in Toronto.

Simard is currently behind the PC candidate in the constituency, Stéphane Sarrazin, with 36.9% of the vote against 42.4% for Sarrazin.

9:55 p.m.

The Green Party is seeing growth in its share of the vote. In the 2018 provincial election, the Green Party of Ontario received 4.84% of the total vote. So far in the 2022 elections they have won 6.2% of the vote.

In his election night speech, Leader Mike Schreiner thanked his party and its candidates.

“Four years ago we made history in Guelph. . . and we made history again by re-electing Ontario’s first Green MLA,” he said. “We have proven that the Greens are here to stay. We are building momentum in this riding and across the province.

The Green Party also had a close race in the riding of Perry Sound-Muskoka. At the time of this writing, Green candidate Matt Richter was five percentage points behind PC incumbent Graydon Smith with 40.5% of the vote to Smith’s 45.5%.

“Seeing too much of a constituency so close that has always turned blue shows there’s momentum,” Schreiner said. “I want to thank Matt Richter and his team for the incredible fight he put up.”

Schreiner said his party would continue to fight sprawl, a reference to PC Leader Doug Ford’s promise to build a new 400-series highway, Highway 413, in the Greater Toronto Area.

“I will fight to be a strong voice of opposition in the Legislative Assembly,” he said.

Schreiner said he will focus on the housing, affordability, healthcare and climate portfolios at Queen’s Park.

He also congratulated Doug Ford and the PCs.

“The people have spoken. . . but at this critical time, I ask you to consider the fiscal, economic and climate implications of paving the places we love, the farmlands that feed us and the nature that protects us,” he said. “The storms and extreme weather conditions we have experienced over the past few months of this campaign alone show what is at stake for our future and that of our children.”

10:10 p.m.

The PCs look likely to increase their lead from the 2018 election. Currently they are expected to win 80 seats, up from 76 seats in 2018. The NDP is currently expected to win 29, the Liberals 8, the Greens one, and one seat is expected be won by an independent.
